ALL ABOUT MY MEXICAN TRIP

– We started our adventure in CANCUN, where we got a taxi from the airport to PLAYA DEL CARMEN, our first destination. In hindsight, Playa del Carmen is the one place I would have missed out. It’s not bad but there are lots of other places that are less touristy that are a lot nicer. It’s quite a busy beach but there is also a huge street filled with shops and restaurants. It’s not bad for a holiday but I liked quite a few other places a lot more. We stayed at the Riviera del Sol Hotel which is cool but it’s not opposite the beach.

– A few days later we went to TULUM. We rented a car in Playa del Carmen and decided to keep it for a while to be able to move around freely. It’s very easy and quite cheap. I love being able to go wherever I want to, getting lost and discovering really cool places in the process. Renting a car gives you the freedom to do all of this kind of stuff and fortunately we were not planning on driving around dangerous zones. So we rented the car and headed over to Tulum which has amazing beaches and a great atmosphere. It is still very touristy but it is a good stopping ground if you want to visit ruins and cenots. We stayed in a beautiful hotel called «Viento de Mar», where we had a charming bungalow (it was all white, just the way it should be hehe) with a terrace that looked on to the turqouise sea. It was a dream. We spent our days on the beach, snorkelling and cycling (you can rent bikes everywhere and they are great), eating guacamole or getting in the car to discover cenots such as Xkeken, one of my favourites (or Grand Cenot, Dos Ojos Cenot or the Sac Actun…) or ruins such as Chichen Itza (a-ma-zing in-cre-di-ble and one of the world’s wonders) and the Tulum ruins. 

– We then headed over to GUANAJUATO, on the north and outside of the Yucatan region. We drove to Cancun to get an internal flight  (with Volaris), whick took us to this lovely picturesque town. It has all the Mexican stereotypes: colourful houses, mariachis, lots of restaurants full of tortilla plates, nachos, ceviche … artisan markets, colourful beetle cars, and breathtaking squares … and charming people who will go out of their way to make your stay a pleasant one. We stayed in the town centre, at the Hotel Edelmira Hotel Boutique and it was super convenient. I am a huge fan of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo so I had to go and check out his museum/house. We also made sure that we checked out the old town centre; the University and the Hidalgo market where I bought this bag and we also took in the view from Pípila.

– From there we took a bus (we went first class because there is very little difference on the price and you have your own TV which means you can watch whatever you like) and arrived in SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE. It’s a lot smaller but equally lovely. Everything is so well looked after, its streets and buildings are stunning. Similarly to Guanajuato, San Miguel is a charming little place with plenty of lovely squares where people chill and delicious food. I really recommend this place. We stayed at the Zaguan Bed&Art, we booked the biggest room because it had an amazing terrace and it was really nicely decorated. 

– After 10 days in the north we went back to the beach. I was dying to see HOLBOX, an island which reminded me a lot of Gili in Bali. There are no cars, no high buildings, no cemented streets, and that is why it is so charming. I forgot to tell you how we made it there: we got another internal flight from Querétaro (near San Miguel) to Cancun. Once in Cancun, we had a driver (you can also get a bus but we were strapped for time) who took us to Chiquilas port which is where the boats leave from to go to the island. You have to be careful because the last boat is at 21:00 and I seem to remember that it is a 3 hour drive from Cancun so make sure that you plan ahead to avoid getting stuck on land *_* There are lots of boats throughout the day and the journey is short, approximately 30 minutes long … and we arrived in Holbox! It’s lovely and the taxis are actually golf carts. You can rent them to drive around the island but predictably, we opted for bikes. We went on a trip to the three islands which takes up a whole day. We spent the day enjoying the beaches and eating delicious food, there is not much more to do as it is pretty quiet. We stayed at the Villas Delfines Hotel in a bungalow on top of the beach, it was all wooden and eco-friendly. 

– To finish off our Mexican adventure we went to ISLA MUJERES. It is near Cancun and you have to get a boat and you soon arrive on the island which has lost a bit of its charm in the last few years but is still pretty cool. We rented a golf cart and we loved it. It was so much fun and the best way of seeing the island. I didn’t want to let go of the wheel so we even fought because of this haha. If I could, I would buy myself a golf cart 🙂 I had the best meal there, in a food stall by the beach and spent our evenings enjoying its streets filled with shops and dinning «al fresco». 

So here is your summary of our trip (it’s super long though) around Mexico. I hope that you find it helpful and that you will try something similar. There is a lot to see but the above destinations are a good place to start, they are definitely worth it. Lots of love!!

Como lo prometido es deuda aquí estoy para contaros todo nuestro viaje por México que hicimos en Enero. Estuvimos casi todo el mes recorriéndonos este maravilloso país (y me hubiese quedado otro mesecillo mas para descubrir muchos otros rincones que me he perdido), y os voy a contar toda nuestra ruta, como nos movimos y los hoteles a los que fuimos, porque me lo habéis pedido mucho y por si os animáis a hacer algo de este estilo (muy aconsejable, por cierto):

-Comenzamos nuestra aventura llegando a CANCÚN, donde cogimos directamente un taxi en el aeropuerto que nos llevó hasta PLAYA DEL CARMEN, el primer destino que teníamos en mente. La verdad es que de todo el viaje Playa del Carmen es lo único que yo me habría ahorrado, no es que esté mal, pero hay otros lugares mucho mas increíbles y menos turísticos para visitar. Se trata de una playa con mucho ambiente y mucho turismo, y una calle peatonal repleta de tiendas y restaurantes. No está mal como sitio de vacaciones pero me gustaron mucho mas otros sitios. Allí nos alojamos en el Hotel Riviera del Sol, que es chuli pero no esta en primera linea.

-Después de unos dias nos fuimos a TULUM. Habíamos alquilado un coche en Playa del Carmen para el viaje y para quedárnoslo un tiempo y asi poder movernos por nuestra cuenta. Es muy sencillo y está bien de precio, a mi me encanta viajar a mi aire, perderme, descubrir…y la libertad que da un coche de alquiler es genial, además las zonas por las que nos íbamos a mover no eran nada peligrosas. Lo dicho, alquilamos el coche y nos fuimos a Tulum que tiene un ambiente y unas playas increíbles. Aunque es un destino muy turístico conserva su encanto y es un buen punto para visitar ruinas y cenotes. Alli nos alojamos en un hotel precioso, «Viento de Mar», y teníamos un bungalow encantador (todo blanco, como tiene que ser, jjj), con terraza con vistas al mar turquesa. Un sueño. Pasábamos nuestros dias en la playa, algo de snorkel, paseos en bici (allí se alquilan por todas partes y son geniales), comiendo guacamole o haciendo mini excursiones con el coche para descubrir cenotes como el de Xkeken que fue uno de mis favoritos (o el Gran Cenote, los Cenotes Dos Ojos, el Sac Actun…) o ruinas como Chichen Itza (in-cre-í-bles, a-lu-ci-nan-tes y una de las 7 maravillas del mundo) o las ruinas mayas de Tulum.

-El siguiente destino era GUANAJUATO, mucho mas al norte, ya fuera de la peninsula de Yucatán. Nos fuimos en coche hasta Cancún para coger alli un vuelo interno (con la compañia Volaris), que nos llevó hasta esta maravillosa cuidad de postal. Yo diría que tiene lo que todos nos imaginamos de identidad mexicana: casitas de colores, mariachis, muchos restaurantes repletos de platos de tortillas, nachos, ceviche…, mercadillos con artesania de la zona, plazas impresionantes, coches escarabajos de colores, …. y una gente totalmente encantadora que te hace la estancia inolvidable. Alli nos alojamos en pleno centro, en el Hotel Edelmira Hotel Boutique y me pareció super práctico por su situacion. Como soy muy fan de Diego Rivera y de Frida Kahlo no me perdi el museo/vivienda de Diego. Tampoco nos perdimos todo el centro histórico, la Universidad o el Mercado Hidalgo donde me compré este bolsito o las vistas de la ciudad desde el mirador Pípila.

-De alli nos marchamos en bus (de primera clase, el precio apenas varía y es mucho mas cómodo además de tener tele para ir viendo la peli que quieras) a SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE. San Miguel es mas peque pero igualmente perfecto. Está todo cuidadisimo, es increíble lo maravillosas que son sus calles y los edificios, no falta detalle y, al igual que Guanajuato, es un rincón encantador lleno de buena energia, de ambientazo en sus plazas donde la gente hace mucha vida y con mucho que ver y comida exquisita. Muy recomendable. (nuestro hotel era el Zaguan Bed&Art, cogimos la habita mas grande que tenía terraza impresionante y deco chulísima)

-Tras 10 dias por el norte volvimos a la playita. Yo tenía muchísimas ganas de conocer HOLBOX, una isla que me recordó un poquito a unas islas Gili de Bali. Es una isla donde no hay ni coches, ni construcciones altas, ni infraestructura como calles asfaltadas, por eso tiene tanto encanto. Me olvidaba de contaros como llegamos a la isla: cogimos un nuevo vuelo interno desde Querétaro (cerca de San Miguel), hasta Cancún. Una vez en Cancún, nos fuimos con un chofer (también hay buses, a nosotros no nos daba tiempo), hasta el puerto de Chiquila, que es donde salen los barquitos para la isla. Aqui tenéis que tener cuidado, ya que el último barco es a las 21:00 y como se tarda bastante -me suena que unas tres horas en coche- desde Cancún, hay que calcularlo bien para no quedarse en tierra *_* Hay muchos barcos al dia y el trayecto es cortito, creo recordar que una media hora….y llegamos a Holbox! Es, como os contaba, un sitio super especial, y los taxis son carritos de golf (si, si, como lo oís). Además puedes alquilarlos para recorrer la isla, aunque nosotros optamos por aquilar bicis (que raro!…jajaj). Alli hicimos la excursión a las tres islas, que es de un dia, y nos dedicamos a disfrutar de la playa, a comer rico y poco mas, ya que es muy tranquilo y lo mejor es simplemente disfrutar de la naturaleza. Nos alojamos en el Hotel Villas Delfines, en un bungalow encima de la playa con vistas al mar. Todo de madera y todo muy ecofriendly.

-Y para terminar nuestra ruta por México nos fuimos a ISLA MUJERES. Está cerquita de Cancún, se pilla un barco en el puerto y en poco se llega a esta isla que ha perdido un poco su encanto en los últimos años pero que sigue siendo chula. Ahí si que alquilamos un carrito de golf y nos lo pasamos pipa. Es divertidísimo, toda una experiencia y la mejor forma de recorrerte la isla que es peque pero que no se puede hacer a pie. Yo no quería soltar el volante, hubo hasta peleas porque quería llevarlo yo siempre. Si pudiera me compraría uno 🙂 Alli me comi la comida mas rica de todo el viaje en un chiringuito en la playa y por la noche disfrutabamos de sus callejuelas con tiendas y restaurantes con terrazas.

Y este es el super resumen (aunque parece largo), de nuestra ruta por México. Espero que os sirva de ayuda y que os animéis a hacer algo similar, hay mil cosas mas para ver pero creo que estos destinos valen totalmente la pena. Mil besos!!!
